Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “MADE IN U.S.A. WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. / —NEW HAVEN, CONN—”, “—MODEL 62A— / 22 S. L. OR L.R.-”, and “—WINCHESTER— / —TRADE MARK—”. The underside front of the receiver is marked with the serial number, “119270” as is the lower grip tang. There are ovalled “WP” proof marks at the top rear of the barrel and the top of the receiver’s chamber ring.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a u-notch leaf and elevator sight dovetailed to the rear of the barrel. The top tang is drilled, tapped and filled for a tang sight (not included).
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece walnut with a flat-bottom grooved slide handle, straight grip, straight comb and serrated sheet steel buttplate. The buttstock shows scattered light nicks and compressions along with residue/staining on the comb. The slide handle shows a series of lightnicks along the right side. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate shows moderate, mostly at the heel and toe, with light surface oxidation in the serrations. Overall, the stocks rate in Very Good-plus condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp rifling. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 80% of its metal finish. The barrel shows scattered light surface oxidation and intermittent nicks along its length. The action shows light wear and minor thinning along with light nicks on most edges The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly and smoothly, and locks up solidly. The hammer has a half-cock safety position. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: Ever since 1890 when Winchester brought out a slide-action rifle with that year’s model number, the Model 1890 pretty much ruled the roost for rimfire repeaters. This tubular-magazine rimfire was wildly popular in the U.S., not only in the myriad shooting galleries throughout the country but also with the young boys and men who loved to shoot and hunt small game. The Model 1890 was a John Browning design and the first successful repeating rimfire rifle. Sixteen years later an almost identical rifle sans the expensive-to-manufacture octagon barrel and crescent buttplate was introduced as the Model 1906. Both models continued to be produced until 1932, when they were replaced by a more modern Model 62. The Model 62 rifles proved extremely popular over the years, more so for aesthetic reasons than for their accuracy. Dead flat receivers, round barrels, outstanding wood-to-metal fit—the craftsmanship and work ethic that went into the guns was valuable to the shooters at the time, and this value remains to this day with the collectors. This Model 62 rifle was made in 1934, quite early in the production history, and is in Very Good condition with 80% of its original finish remaining. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion. This is a well-maintained rifle with a little honest wear. Good luck and happy bidding!
