Markings: The left of the barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. / NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED AUGUST 21. 1894.” in front of the rear sight dovetail, “-NICKEL STEEL BARREL- / ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER” below the dovetail and at the receiver with “30 W.C.F.”. The top of the barrel at the rear and the top of the chamber ring are each marked with an ovalled “WP” proof. The front underside of the receiver is marked “868254”. The top tang is marked “MODEL 1894 / -WINCHESTER- / TRADE MARK REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. & FGN.”.

Barrel Length: 20″, Round

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a tall Marble beaded blade pinned to a slotted base fixed to the front of the barrel. The bead is missing. The rear sight is a folding ladder-style sight dovetailed to the rear of the barrel. The rear sight presents a “U”-notch when folded down with a “U”-notched slider on the ladder which is marked from “0” to “20” in multiples of 5. The top tang is drilled, tapped and filled for a tang sight (none included).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are 2-piece smooth walnut with banded forend, straight grip, straight comb and steel carbine-style buttplate. The stocks have scattered nicks, dings, scuffs and scratches, some of these have damaged portions of the surface wood. Most notable in the buttstock is a ding in the right of the wrist and a scratch below the comb on the left toward the rear. The forend has a few more notable dings along the left. There is a short, thin crack at the left-rear of the top tang. There are areas of thinning finish, most notable in the right of the buttstock. The LOP measures 13″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has worn to white at the heel and toe where there is some surface oxidation. The tang and face have generally strong blue finish with some scattered light marks. Overall, the stocks are in Good-Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright with sharp rifling. There is some light erosion in the bore. Our gauge shows and ME of about 1.25.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 70% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. The barrel and magazine tube have some scattered light nicks, scratches and wear forward of the forend with more notable wear on the bottom of the magazine. There are a few light marks on the barrel over the forend. The receiver has handling wear on the bottom and on the top with several scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches and a few more notable scratches. Most worn areas show discoloration from oxidation. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety and there is a lever safety. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a Winchester Model 94 Carbine in .30-30 WCF that was made in 1919. The .30-30 WCF, especially coupled with the Winchester 94, is nearly synonymous with “deer rifle” in America and may have been used to harvest more deer than any other specific rifle/cartridge combination. This example has honest wear, indicative of use in the field but in quite good condition for a century-old field gun. We can only hope to be in this good condition after 100 years! This pre-64 vintage rifle should be of interest to Winchester collectors but could also be back out in the field dropping deer for another century. Please see our photos and good luck!
