Our Assessment:  The Winchester Model 1885 High Wall was the first rifle designed by John Moses Browning to be adopted by Winchester, setting a new standard for strength and precision in single-shot rifles. The “High Wall” variant is especially sought after for its ability to handle higher-pressure cartridges and heavier loads, and it became a favorite among competitive shooters and big game hunters alike.

This example, manufactured in 1889 and chambered in the versatile .38-55 Winchester cartridge, offers a powerful blend of accuracy and mild recoil. With its 30” barrel, crisp iron sights, and tight action, this rifle represents a capable black powder-era firearm that still impresses with its mechanical precision and historical charm.

As an antique Winchester with sharp markings, functional mechanics, and desirable chambering, this High Wall is well suited for collectors of 19th-century American rifles, vintage shooters, and enthusiasts of John Browning’s earliest achievements. Whether displayed proudly or put back into service at the range, it’s a timeless example of quality from Winchester’s golden age.  Please see our High Quality photos and good luck on your bids.-C.M.
