LSB#: LSB250726MC001

Make: Winchester

Model: 1885 Falling Block

Serial Number: 00007MV85J

Year of Manufacture: Modern

Caliber: .405

Action Type: Single Shot, Falling Block

Markings: The barrel is marked with the standard “.405 cal” style marking consistent with other .405 chambered rifles; additional maker and proof markings line up with the barrel markings and are consistent with Winchester-style stamping for this chambering. The “TV” style scope is marked “Redfield 2x–7x.” The buttpad is marked “TERMINATOR.”

Barrel Length: 28″ (octagon)

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade. The rear sight has been removed and the barrel plugged. The tang-mounted sight remains and is an adjustable peep-style aperture. The rifle is fitted with a Redfield “TV” 2x–7x scope mounted on a Leopold mount. The glass is clear.

Stock Configuration & Condition: Straight English stock in well-cared-for condition. The buttpad is supple and bears the “TERMINATOR” marking. There is some light splatter on the bottom barrel flat that appears to be organic in nature and may be blood; it is localized and does not appear to affect the wood or metal finish beyond surface staining. The stock shows normal handling wear consistent with careful use. LOP measures approximately 13.75″. The rifle has two sling studs.

Type of Finish: Blue on metal with natural wood stock.

Finish Originality: Original / period-correct to the rifle.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright, the rifling is sharp. There is no visible erosion in the bore but there is stubborn fouling throughout. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.

Mechanics: The falling block action appears to operate smoothly and locks up as intended. The Redfield scope is mounted on a Leopold mount. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Accessories: Redfield 2x–7x “TV” scope on Leopold mount; adjustable tang peep sight. Two sling studs.

Overall Condition: Very good overall cosmetic condition with careful stock preservation, clear optics, and a clean, sharp bore aside from fouling. About  95% retained. The octagon barrel and finish present well with only minor surface handling marks and the noted localized splatter on the bottom barrel flat.

Our Assessment:
The Winchester Model 1885 is a classic single-shot falling block design by John Browning that found favor with shooters who valued a strong, accurate action for hunting and target work. Chambering this example in .405 is a noteworthy combination — the .405 (often seen as the .405 WCF) was popularized in the early 20th century as a big-game cartridge and is historically associated with stout hunting rifles of the period.

This rifle pairs traditional 1885 lines and an octagon barrel with period-correct sighting options and a modern Redfield scope, giving it a bridge between collectible interest and practical big-game capability. The stock and metal retain attractive presentation; the possible organic splatter noted on the bottom barrel flat is superficial in appearance and has not been treated here beyond documentation.

Cosmetically and mechanically the rifle is a clean, compelling example for the collector or shooter interested in historic single-shot rifles built for serious use. The clear optics, sharp bore (aside from fouling), and intact furniture support that conclusion. So bid high and bid firm. I encourage you to take a look at the condition of the rifle in our high-quality photos. Good luck with your bid. -K.F.
