Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “TAYLOR & CO WINCHESTER VA / A. UBERTI MADE IN ITALY”. The bottom of the receiver behind the lifter is marked “CAT.5991”. The lower tang is marked with the serial number “W33815” and “A. UBERTI-ITALY”. The upper tang is marked “MODEL 1873”.

Barrel Length: 20”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a white beaded blade dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is a u-notch elevator sight dovetailed to the barrel. 

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are checkered wood with a capped forearm, semi-pistol grip, straight comb, and a crescent steel buttplate. There are a few scattered compressions and nicks. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/8” from the front of the trigger to the end of the buttplate. There is a leather wrap around the lever. The plate shows no notable wear. The stocks rate in about Fine overall condition.

Type of Finish: In the White 

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. There is some minor fouling down the length. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.  

Overall Condition: The balance of the finish shows operational and handling wear. The top front of the receiver has a large chunk missing from an angle grinder. The top of the rear sight has been grinded down.  By the looks of it, the rear sight was ground down with an angle grinder and in the process the receiver was accidentally ground down as well. The screw heads are sharp to tool marked. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fair condition given the chunk missing from the front of the receiver. The integrity of the barrel and has not been compromised so this will still be safe to shoot. 

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lever safety and lever lock are present. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be required to meet your maintenance standards. The action has been worked and enhanced with a 4th generation short-stroke kit.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle included a leather buttstock sleeve. 

Our Assessment: This Uberti 1873 Carbine, imported by Taylor & Co., is part of a rare special run known as the “White Rifle” series—never blued and left in the white to showcase the precision machining of its Italian craftsmanship. Fitted with upgraded checkered pistol grip stocks and a crescent steel buttplate, this carbine stands apart in both aesthetics and configuration. The action has been worked and enhanced with a 4th generation short-stroke kit, popular upgrades among competition shooters for its faster, smoother cycling. While the rifle shows minor handling wear and some oxidation on the receiver, it retains excellent mechanical function and crisp bore condition.
