The finish on the stock is strong throughout, and the checkering is sharp. Overall, the stock rates in Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light operational wear on the action, along with faint pitting on the top of the barrel, 2 1/2″ down from the muzzle. There is also some pitting on the right rim of the magazine box. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads on the rifle are sharp, but the screw heads on the scope mounts are tooled, but retain serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good to Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. The trigger has a crisp and clean break. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the scope mounts and ring as mentioned above.
Our Assessment: The Weatherby Mark V has long stood as a symbol of innovation and performance in the world of sporting rifles. Introduced in 1958 and built to Roy Weatherby’s specifications, the Mark V was immediately recognized for its exceptionally strong nine-lug bolt design, sleek stock lines, and the ability to safely harness the high-velocity Weatherby cartridges. Early production rifles, like this one chambered in .240 Weatherby Magnum, were manufactured in West Germany by J.P. Sauer & Sohn, a renowned gunmaker whose precision and craftsmanship helped establish the Mark V as a premier sporting rifle. The .240 Weatherby Magnum itself was Roy Weatherby’s answer to flat-shooting, high-velocity varmint and medium game performance, delivering blistering speeds with light recoil.
This particular rifle, produced between 1959 and 1973, features a 24-inch barrel paired with a beautifully checkered walnut Monte Carlo stock, complete with cheek piece, rosewood forend tip, and grip cap—all signature Weatherby styling cues of the era. The factory vented recoil pad remains in place, along with sling studs for practical field carry. Condition-wise, the stock is in Excellent shape with sharp checkering and only minimal handling wear, while the blued finish shows honest use with some operational wear and faint pitting on the barrel and magazine box. Mechanically, the action is tight, the safety functions properly, and the bore remains in excellent condition, bright with sharp rifling that rates 10/10.
Adding to its appeal, this example comes equipped with Buehler scope bases and a single scope ring, ready for a period-correct optic to complete the rifle. Collectors will appreciate this as an early, West German–made Mark V, a highly sought-after variation that represents the earliest and most finely crafted generation of Weatherby rifles. For the hunter or enthusiast, the rifle remains fully capable in the field, while for the collector, it stands as a classic piece of Weatherby history from the golden era of high-velocity magnums.
