Our Assessment: Manufactured by Valmet Oy of Finland and imported by Savage Arms of Westfield, Massachusetts, the Model 2400 reflects the European tradition of practical combination guns adapted for the American market. Produced between 1975 and 1980, this over-under configuration pairs a 12 gauge shotgun barrel with a .308 Winchester rifle barrel, offering field versatility in a single break-action platform. The 23 1/2 inch vent rib barrel assembly, marked with both Savage and Valmet designations, showcases Finnish workmanship combined with American distribution during a period when combination guns filled a niche for hunters pursuing varied game in mixed terrain.
The shotgun barrel is chambered for 2 3/4 inch shells with a fixed Improved Modified choke, while the rifle barrel is chambered in .308 Winchester, a cartridge introduced in the 1950s and widely respected for its balanced performance on medium and large North American game. Both bores are bright, with sharp rifling in the rifle barrel and no visible erosion in either tube, rating 9 out of 10 with only light fouling noted. The firearm retains approximately 97 percent of its original blued finish with light handling marks. There is minor solder bleed and light corrosion around the monoblock, consistent with barrel assembly construction. Markings remain clear, screw heads are sharp, and pins are unmarred. The two-piece checkered walnut stock set features a semi-pistol grip, fluted raised comb, vented rubber buttpad, and sling provisions, with a 14 inch length of pull. The wood rates in Fine condition.
Mechanically, the break action locks up properly and the tang-mounted safety functions as intended. This superposed hammerless design uses a single trigger with a push-button selector located at the upper portion of the trigger to alternate between barrels. The trigger break is crisp and clean. Weaver-style bases with see-through rings are mounted to the rib, and a sling is included. With its dual-caliber capability and solid Finnish manufacture, this Valmet-built Savage 2400 stands as a versatile and well-preserved example of a European-style combination gun tailored for American hunters.
