Markings: The left side of the slide has gold scroll surrounding the Iwo Jima flag raising scene and is marked “UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS / LIMITED EDITION”, “COLT GOVERNMENT MODEL .45 CAL” and “HARTFORD, CT” with a gold Eagle, Globe & Anchor behind the slide serrations. The right of the slide has the same Eagle, Globe & Anchor behind the slide with gold scroll surrounding the Iwo Jima flag raising scene and “UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS / LIMITED EDITION”. The right of the frame is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A.” and with the serial number. The left of the trigger guard is marked “R” and “VP” in triangle, the right “V”.

Barrel Length: 5″

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade fixed to the front of the slide. The rear sight is a square notch dovetailed to the rear of the slide.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are checkered walnut with gold-colored Colt medallions. The grips have no notable wear or damage, only light handling marks. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in Excellent condition.

Type of Finish: Blue & Gold

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are a few scattered minor marks. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The slide has very light play to the frame. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with a French-fit wood Colt United States Marine Corps Limited Edition display case and a single 7-round magazine. 

Our Assessment: Made in 1979 as a limited edition to commemorate the United States Marine Corps, this Colt Government Model 1911 is a worthy tribute to Marines, who have been serving America since before the end of the American Revolution. The 1911 served the Marines as the standard issue sidearm for nearly a century with some variants still in use today. This example is decorated with the Iwo Jima flag raising scene as well as the Eagle, Globe & Anchor emblem of the Corps. It will make a wonderful addition to any Devil Dog’s collection as well as a fine gift for the Jarhead in your life, and with the auction closing at the end of September, it should arrive with plenty of time before their birthday!
