Markings: The left of the slide is marked “PATENTED APR. 20, 1897. SEPT. 9, 1902 / DEC. 19, 1905. FEB. 14, 1911. AUG. 19, 1913” with the barest remnant of a rampant colt and “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. / HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.”, the right is marked “3421”, the bottom of the slide at the right-rear is marked “U”. The left of the trigger guard is marked “7”. The left of the frame is marked “FJA” below the slide stop with a fairly clear “P” below and behind the magazine release. There is another “P” on the top of the slide next to a punch mark. The right of the frame is marked “UNITED STATES PROPERTY / NO 1783421”, “M1911 A1 U.S. ARMY”, “S A”, “T” and behind the grip with an Ordnance wheel with crossed cannons. The right of the trigger guard is marked “N M / N” and “U”. The barrel is marked “NM 7790429 / COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. / 1783421” at the chamber, the LEFT link-lug is marked “P”. The front face of the bushing is marked “7267718 / N M”, the outside of the barrel bushing is hand-scribed “3421”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a tall, 1/8″ wide patridge blade with integral serrated, ramped base fixed to the front of the slide. The rear sight is a tall 1/8″ wide square-notch dovetailed to the rear of the slide.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered walnut. The grips have no notable wear or damage, only light handling marks. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Excellent condition as not original to the gun.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 97% of its current metal finish. The finish is generally strong throughout with a few scattered light nicks and scuffs. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings range from clear to worn and incomplete. Overall, this pistol is in about Fine-Excellent condition as customized by the Springfield Armory.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The slide to frame fit has barely perceptible play. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, it may need a thorough cleaning to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with a total of two 7-round magazines, copy of serial-matching DD Form 1149-3 (Requisition and Shipping/Invoice Document) and a cardboard box. One magazine is marked “L” on top of the floorplate tongue, the other is marked “S” on the top and “C-S” on the bottom, each showing minor operational wear, intact feed lips and a strong spring, in about Fine condition. The box has a label marked “1005-738-3026-B001 / PISTOL AUTO CAL 45 M1911A1-NM W/E / 1 EA A 5/62 / SPRINGFIELD ARMORY”, shows scattered storage wear, some discoloration, and tape loss at corners, in about Good condition.
Our Assessment: Developed from the standard-issue 1911 sidearm, the National Match pistols were accurized and fitted with adjustable target sights for use by U.S. military competition shooters. Using Bill Jenkins’ book “U.S. Military Match and Marksmanship Automatic Pistols” for reference, we have confirmed that this example has proper markings, features and matching serialized parts for a 1959 or 1960 National Match pistol assembled by Springfield Armory. In 1959, a serrated, long plastic trigger was introduced which was adjustable for over-travel, checkering in the fronstrap consisting of milled vertical and horizontal serrations were added, and barrels were modified with a wider feed ramp for use of wad cutter ammunition. Following the actual 1959 National Matches competitions, it was determined that the plastic triggers could swell as much as 0.002″ due to climate, and for the 1960 season, the triggers were fitted with sufficient clearance to prevent swelling from causing problems. After the 1960 season, the plastic triggers were replaced with aluminum triggers. While this should make for a great target pistol for another lifetime, USGI National Match pistols are also sought-after collectors’ items. With its matching numbered parts, proper configuration, tall fixed sights, high condition, and what appears to be its original shipping box when it was sold via the DCM, this pistol will certainly interest the collectors.
