Our Assessment: The Uberti 1885 High Wall is a modern interpretation of John Moses Browning’s legendary single-shot rifle design, widely regarded as one of the strongest and most elegant falling block actions ever produced. Contemporary examples from A. Uberti are known for faithful exterior lines, high-quality materials, and attractive finishes that echo the late nineteenth-century originals while benefiting from modern metallurgy. The heavy 30-inch octagonal barrel and classic High Wall profile place this rifle squarely in the tradition of long-range black powder and early smokeless sporting rifles.
Chambered in .45-90, this rifle is configured around a powerful nineteenth-century cartridge developed for extended-range performance and heavy game. The substantial barrel contour and length are well suited to the cartridge’s ballistic characteristics, offering stability and balance consistent with period target and sporting rifles. Notably, the barrel has been modified to accept a two-piece optic mount, with the rear sight dovetail blocked and the front sight dovetail showing evidence of alteration, indicating a shift from traditional iron-sight use toward a scoped configuration.
This example retains approximately 99 percent of its original metal finish, with vivid case colors on the receiver and crisp bluing on the barrel. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion present, rating 10 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The Grade A walnut stocks show minimal handling wear, with some finish staining from storage but no cracks or chips, presenting in Fine condition. Markings are clear, screw heads are sharp, and pins are unmarred. Mechanically, the falling block operates correctly. Overall, this rifle presents as a very clean and visually striking modern High Wall with excellent finish and bore condition, offset by noted mechanical concerns that should be addressed prior to firing.
