Our Assessment: This Uberti Model 1873 lever action rifle, imported by Taylor & Co, is a faithful modern interpretation of one of the most iconic repeating rifles of the American West. The original 1873 earned its enduring reputation as the “Gun That Won the West,” prized for its smooth toggle link action and practical handling qualities. This 2020 production example captures that legacy with period correct contours, traditional finishes, and solid modern craftsmanship, offering a rifle that closely mirrors the look and feel of the classic nineteenth century design.
Chambered in .45 Colt, the rifle is paired with a cartridge introduced in 1873 that became one of the most enduring revolver and rifle rounds of the frontier era. In a 20 inch octagon barrel, the cartridge offers efficient performance and a shooting character well suited to the 1873 platform. The iron sights consist of a dovetailed blade front and a semi buckhorn square notch rear with elevator, providing a traditional and functional sight picture. Checkered wood stocks with capped forearm, straight grip, straight comb, and a rifle style steel buttplate reinforce the rifle’s classic profile and contribute to its balanced handling.
Condition remains strong overall, with approximately 98 percent of the original blue and case colored finish present. Minor handling marks are visible, along with light scratches in the receiver’s color case, though the case coloring itself remains vivid and well defined. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, shows minor fouling, and rates 9.5 out of 10. Screw heads are mostly sharp, with light tool marks noted at the end of the magazine tube, and markings are clear throughout. The action functions correctly, and the rifle includes its factory box. This Model 1873 from Taylor & Co offers a well executed modern take on a legendary lever action, blending historical styling with contemporary manufacture.
