Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is stubborn fouling scattered throughout. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 8.5/10.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 95% of its original blued finish. Finish loss is visible on most leading edges, the muzzle, cylinder edges, and other high points. The finish shows typical thinning consistent with holster wear and military service. There are scattered handling marks and minor scratches. Screw heads remain serviceable with moderate tool marks. All markings are clear and legible. Overall, this revolver rates in Good-plus condition as a C&R.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly with proper cylinder lockup and timing. We did not fire this revolver. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment:
The Smith & Wesson Model 1917 was born of necessity during World War I, when the U.S. military needed more sidearms than Colt could produce in the form of the M1911 pistol. Chambered in .45 ACP and designed to use half-moon clips for rapid loading, the 1917 was a robust and reliable alternative that earned favor with troops for its stopping power and ease of maintenance. These revolvers saw extensive service not only in WWI, but also in World War II, and even in later conflicts as surplus arms.

This example, serial number 150378, is a particularly appealing survivor. Retaining about 95% of its original blue finish, it shows honest wear from use rather than abuse, with matching numbers on the major components and correct U.S. military proofs throughout. The non-original but well-fitted walnut grips complete the package without detracting from its historical integrity.

For the military collector, Smith & Wesson enthusiast, or anyone seeking an iconic U.S. service revolver, this Model 1917 offers both mechanical soundness and strong visual appeal—an excellent representation of a classic American fighting sidearm.
