Markings: The rear face of the cylinder, the bottom of the barrel, all the pieces of the ejector, and the front of the retaining pin are marked with the serial number “1955”. The front face of the loading gate is marked “55”. There are two small British proof marks on the left shoulder of the barrel. There is a British proof behind each chamber on the cylinder.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a rounded blade fixed atop of the barrel at the muzzle. The rear sight is a V-notch cut in the rear of the top strap.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip is one-piece checkered wood that envelops the back strap. The smooth borders have some nicks and scratches and show light crazing in the finish. The checkering shows light wear and is sharp. The grip has darkened with age and handling. There are no cracks or chips. Overall, the grips rate in about Fine condition as Antique.

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright and the rifling is worn yet defined. There is light scattered erosion with some pitting mid bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 65% of its metal finish. There is scattered erosion and putting throughout the surfaces, the most notable is on the sides of the frame, trigger guard, and the ejector. There are several nicks, dings, and scratches throughout. There is thinning at all leading edges. The screw heads range from sharp to slightly disfigured with strong slots. The markings range from clear partially faded but legible. Overall, this handgun rates in about Very Good condition as Antique.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder lockup produces minimal play. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: Taken from College Hill Arsenal, “William Tranter was one of the most prominent Gun, Rifle & Pistol Makers in the Birmingham trade during the mid-19th century. Tranter was born in 1816 and died in 1890. During his working life, his name became synonymous with quality handgun design and manufacture, although he produced small arms of all types and held patents related to all types of firearm actions. He went into business for himself circa 1840, after completing his apprenticeship with Hollis Brothers & Co, which he had begun in 1830. The most identifiable feature of the Model 1863 “Army” revolver was the side mounted, compound ejector mechanism that resembled a percussion revolver’s ramrod much more than an ejection system. The system was mounted on the right side of the barrel and frame and by lowering the lever, a plunger was pushed into the chamber to push out the spent cartridge.” This is an example of a model 1863 revolver that is in about Very Good condition as Antique.
