Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright and the rifling is sharp. There is light erosion in the bore. There is minor fouling in the grooves. In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates 9.5/10.

Many military and C&R eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This is not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide. For example, the U.S. used corrosive ammunition throughout WWII. The U.S. military did not begin to phase out corrosive-primed ammunition until the 1950s.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. There is light handling wear throughout. There are light spots of oxidation throughout. The screw heads show light use. The markings are crisp. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition for a C&R.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: 1 Magazine, leather sling.

Our Assessment: The Swiss Schmidt-Rubin K31 is widely regarded as one of the finest military rifles of the 20th century, thanks to its precision manufacturing, unique straight-pull bolt design, and the exceptional accuracy of the 7.5x55mm Swiss cartridge. Adopted in 1931 and used throughout the mid-20th century, the K31 reflects Switzerland’s dedication to marksmanship and craftsmanship even in standard-issue military arms. Built by Waffenfabrik Bern, these rifles were issued to a citizen-soldier army, and their high quality, matched parts, and tight tolerances make them highly sought after by collectors and shooters alike. This example is in very good condition, retaining about 95% of its original blued finish with minor handling wear and a few spots of oxidation. The bore is excellent, showing only light fouling and erosion, and the rifling remains sharp, making it an excellent candidate for continued range use. The wood stock is in strong condition with no cracks, just the usual dings and scuffs from military service. Notably, this rifle is equipped with a clamp-on Swiss diopter sight set, including a hooded front post and a precision adjustable rear diopter—a highly desirable setup for precision shooting.

With its matching serial-numbered magazine, strong bore, and complete configuration including a leather sling and rare diopter sights, this K31 is not just a collectible—it’s a high-performance military rifle. For enthusiasts of Swiss arms, fans of straight-pull actions, or anyone seeking a C&R-eligible precision bolt gun, this rifle delivers superb value, heritage, and functionality. Whether on the range or in a collection, it stands as a testament to Swiss engineering excellence. -R.E.
