Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 93% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light to severe corrosion throughout all metal surfaces. The receiver, lever, trigger guard, and sling ring are rusted over. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp, but some are corroded. Overall, this rifle rates in Fair condition, due to the corrosion.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, the safety switch does not move due to the rust and is stuck in the safe position. The lever lockup is strong. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the Ruger box and paperwork.
Our Assessment: This Ruger No. 1 single-shot rifle presents in Fair overall condition, retaining about 93% of its original blue finish but showing extensive rust and oxidation across the receiver, lever, and trigger guard. The corrosion has frozen the safety in the “safe” position, and some exposed metal requires careful cleaning. The 26″ barrel remains intact and retains sharp markings, while the stocks show light scratches, compression marks, and a few cracks in the buttstock. The checkering remains sharp, the LOP measures 13 5/8″, and overall the wood rates Very Good. The bore is gray with defined rifling and light erosion, which in this writer’s opinion rates 5 / 10.
This Ruger No. 1 chambered in 6.5 Remington Magnum combines classic falling-block strength with a flat-shooting cartridge built for accuracy and range. However, given the extent of corrosion and the seized safety, the rifle requires professional attention before any attempt at firing—do not fire until inspected by a qualified gunsmith. Once stabilized and cleaned, it remains a worthy example of Ruger’s iconic single-shot platform and a desirable project for restoration or preservation. We are no longer offering layaway.
