The balance of the finish shows light wear, with small patches showing the start of minor surface corrosion on the barrel and the receiver, which should polish out very well. Our Assessment: The Ruger No. 1 stands as one of the finest expressions of Bill Ruger’s commitment to blending traditional design with modern precision. Introduced in 1967, it revived the elegant falling-block single-shot rifle for a new generation of sportsmen, offering strength, reliability, and refinement in a compact, streamlined package. This 1987 example, chambered in .300 Weatherby Magnum, showcases the versatility of the platform — equally at home in the field or as a collector’s showpiece.
The .300 Weatherby Magnum, developed by Roy Weatherby in the mid-1940s, is famous for its blistering velocity, flat trajectory, and long-range performance. Built on the .300 H&H Magnum case, it was one of the earliest and most successful “magnumized” cartridges, capable of cleanly taking any big game animal on the North American continent. Paired with the strong, beautifully machined falling-block action of the Ruger No. 1, it provides exceptional accuracy and power within an elegant, single-shot format prized by serious riflemen.
This example remains in outstanding condition, retaining about 98% of its original blue finish with a bright, flawless bore and sharp checkering throughout the walnut stock. The rifle’s presentation — complete with its original box, paperwork, and Ruger rings — makes it an appealing addition for both collectors and shooters who appreciate classic design and precision engineering. The No. 1 has long been regarded as the gentleman’s rifle, and in .300 Weatherby Magnum, it represents the pinnacle of modern sporting performance.
