Our Assessment: The Ruger No. 1 in .45-70 Government is a modern classic that pays tribute to the golden age of American single-shot rifles while delivering rock-solid reliability and craftsmanship. This particular example, manufactured in 2000, features a 22″ barrel ideal for balancing the hard-hitting performance of the .45-70 with manageable handling in the field. Iron sights come standard, giving it that traditional big-bore utility feel, while a barrel-mounted scope base adds flexibility for those looking to stretch the rifle’s effective range with optics. Built on Ruger’s strong falling-block action, the No. 1 is revered for its simplicity, strength, and elegance qualities that make it a favorite among hunters and collectors alike.

The rifle is outfitted with classic checkered walnut furniture that speaks to Ruger’s attention to detail, with crisp checkering and deep, rich grain that reflects its premium status. A black rubber buttpad softens the recoil of the stout .45-70 round while preserving the rifle’s traditional silhouette. The No. 1’s compact profile and single-shot configuration make it a joy to carry in the field, and its blend of old-world charm with modern manufacturing ensures it’s as functional as it is handsome. Whether you’re taking it out for a nostalgic big-game hunt or admiring it on the wall, the Ruger No. 1 is a timeless expression of American rifle artistry.
