The balance of the finish shows minor wear, with evidence of steel wool polishing on the barrel, and minor operational wear on the friction portions of the action. The markings are clear and legible. Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the tang mounted safety. The trigger has a crisp and clean break. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the scope and scope covers as mentioned above.
Our Assessment: The Ruger M77 established itself as Ruger’s rugged, well-made controlled-round-feed bolt action for hunters who wanted a dependable, no-nonsense field rifle. By the mid-1970s the M77 had earned a reputation for solid construction, a stout action, and straightforward ergonomics — qualities well suited to large-bore hunting duties. This 1976 M77 in .458 Winchester Magnum pairs a 24? barrel and classic checkered walnut with a practical Redfield 1¾–5× wide-angle scope, presenting the sort of clean, ready-to-use package that will appeal to big-game hunters seeking a traditional American dangerous-game tool.
Chambered in .458 Winchester Magnum, this rifle is built to deliver heavy-bullet performance at close to moderate ranges — a hard-hitting cartridge for thick country and large game where maximum terminal effect is required. The rifle checks very well: it retains approximately 98% of its original blued finish, the bore is bright and sharp (rated 9.5/10), the walnut stock fits tightly and rates Fine to Excellent, and the action, tang safety and trigger functioned correctly during inspection. The Redfield scope and Butler Creek covers are useful, field-ready additions. Please check out our high quality photos, and good luck on your bids! – J.D.
