Our Assessment: This Ruger M77 chambered in .243 Winchester, made in 1987, is a classic bolt-action rifle that blends traditional styling with dependable performance. What sets this example apart is its full-length Mannlicher-style stock, a rare and elegant feature that gives the rifle a distinctive European look and adds to its balance and handling. The 18″ barrel keeps the rifle compact and quick to shoulder, making it ideal for brush hunting or stalking lighter game such as deer or varmints. The original M77 action from this era features a tang safety and a controlled-round feed, both prized for their reliability and intuitive operation.
Topping the rifle is a Leupold VX-1 2-7x33mm scope with a Duplex reticle, a lightweight and versatile optic that complements the rifle’s handling characteristics. The low-profile magnification range is well-suited for the .243’s flat trajectory, offering clear sight pictures from close-in shots to moderate-range precision. The scope’s compact form factor preserves the rifle’s sleek silhouette, and the Duplex reticle provides fast target acquisition in various light conditions. Together, the Ruger M77 and this Leupold optic form a balanced, field-ready setup that’s equally at home in the deer woods or on the range, a timeless combination of utility and craftsmanship.
