Our Assessment: The Steyr Scout in .308 Winchester is a modern interpretation of Colonel Jeff Cooper’s legendary scout rifle concept designed to be a lightweight, versatile, and rugged general-purpose rifle. With its compact 19″ cold hammer-forged barrel. The rifle is finished in a durable synthetic stock, purpose built for field use with integrated features that reflect Cooper’s original vision. The Steyr Scout includes a forward-mounted optics rail for long eye relief scopes, backup iron sights, an integral bipod cleverly stowed in the forend, and dual magazine storage in the stock one active and one spare in the lower rear portion of the stock.
Colonel Jeff Cooper, a Marine and firearms instructor, developed the scout rifle concept in the 1980s, envisioning a rifle that could do just about everything from hunting to defense with speed and efficiency. His ideal rifle would weigh under 7 pounds, measure under a meter in length, and chamber a cartridge powerful enough for medium to large game like the .308 Winchester. Key to the concept was the forward-mounted scope for rapid target acquisition and both-eyes-open shooting. The Steyr Scout was the first factory rifle to fully realize this doctrine, developed with Cooper’s direct input. It remains the benchmark for scout rifles today, a testament to Cooper’s enduring influence on practical rifle design.
