Markings: There is no visible import mark. The right side of the barrel at the chamber and the receiver’s chamber ring are marked “29616”. The top of the receiver ring is marked “MADE IN AUSTRIA / Original / Mannlicher / Schoenauer / Mod MC / KAL 30-06”. The left side of the chamber ring is marked with an Eagle proof mark and “60”. The left side of the barrel is marked with proof marks and “60”. The floorplate is marked with a “STEYR” bullseye logo over “WAFFEN DSCHULNIGG / SALZBURG-AUSTRIA” and has elaborate floral scroll engraving surrounding a game scene. The trigger guard also shows floral scroll engraving. The bottom of the bolt handle is marked “9616” and “1”.
Barrel Length: 22”
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed to a checkered, ramped base fixed to the front of the barrel. The base is slotted for a hood that is not included. The rear sight has a fixed “U”-notch and a folding “U”-notch marked “300”, dovetailed to a boss at the rear of the barrel. The left of the receiver is equipped with a Pachmayr rail and two rings supporting a vintage Supra scope 2.5-6x magnification and a crosshair reticle. The scope shows scattered light wear and the glass shows a yellowish hue with some spots of residue. The scope rates in about Good-Plus condition.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one piece checkered walnut with floral engraving on the capped pistol grip and forearm, an ebony nosecap, Monte Carlo comb with cheekpiece, serrated black buttplate, and a sling swivel in the belly. The stalk is not original to the rifle. The stock has some infrequently scattered light nicks, draglines, and shallow compressions. The engraving is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13” and 14” from the fronts of the triggers to the back of the buttplate. The plate has light wear and the serrations are sharp. Overall, the stocks are in about Fine-plus condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. There is light thinning on the leading edges. The lower metal has some scattered surface oxidation. There are infrequently scattered light nicks and scratches throughout the metal surfaces with one more notable scratch on the top left of the barrel. The screw heads are tool-marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Very Good-Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Mannlicher Schoenauer rifles were very popular in Europe, and were mainly made in European calibers until after WWII when they began to be imported into the United States. The Model 1900 rifle continuously evolved until the last model was developed: the Model 1961 MCA. The Model 1956 MC came about from Stoeger’s urging in order to increase sales in the United States. A tall Monte Carlo comb (hence the MC designation) with cheekpiece was added to make the rifle easier to use with a scope. This is an M1956 MC Carbine with a 22” barrel chambered in .30-06. The rifle has an aftermarket engraved stock and is equipped with double-set triggers. The rifle is in about Very Good-Fine condition with about 90% of its original metal finish remaining. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. Mannlicher-Schoenauer rifles are known to have the smoothest action of any bolt action rifle, helped a little by their rotary magazine that does not drag on the bolt like the follower in a conventional magazine. And although this rifle would make someone a great lightweight deer rifle that could be used on all of the North American game animals, its nice condition is going to catch the attention of the collectors out there who are certain to bid this up well past where the shooters will be willing to go.
