The rear sight has a fixed “U”-notch and a folding “U”-notch marked “300”, dovetailed to a boss at the rear of the barrel. The chamber ring and the left of the split-bridge are drilled and tapped with two-piece Redfield bases installed.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one piece checkered walnut full stock with nosecap, capped pistol grip, Monte Carlo comb with shadow-line cheekpiece, serrated black plastic buttplate, and a sling swivel in the belly. Another swivel is mounted through the forend in front of the checkering. The stock has several scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. There are no chips or cracks. The checkering is well defined. The LOP measures 14″ and 13″ from the fronts of the triggers to the back of the buttplate. The plate has light wear with well defined serrations. Overall, the stocks are in Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Blued
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is light gray with sharp rifling. There is light erosion scattered through the bore. In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates 6 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The finish is generally strong. Most of the balance is handling wear on the bottom metal with a little wear on the nosecap and the barrel just above the cap. The wear in the floorplate shows a little discoloration from oxidation. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with usable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good-plus condition.
Mechanics: The rear trigger would not set during our function check. Otherwise, the action functions correctly, the front trigger operates properly when not set. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Included is leather sling.
Our Assessment: The Mannlicher Schoenauer rifles were very popular in Europe, and were mainly made in European calibers until after WWII when they began to be imported into the United States. The Model 1900 rifle continuously evolved until the last model was developed: the Model 1961 MCA. The Model 1956 MC came about from Stoeger’s urging in order to increase sales in the United States. A tall Monte Carlo comb (hence the MC designation) with cheekpiece was added to make the rifle easier to use with a scope. This is an M1956 MC Carbine with a 20” barrel chambered in .30-06 Springfield. The rifle has a full-length Mannlicher style stock and is equipped with double set-triggers, though it is not currently setting properly. The rifle is in Very Good-plus condition with about 96% of its original metal finish remaining. The bore has some erosion, but apart from the set-trigger the mechanics are still good. Mannlicher-Schoenauer rifles are known to have the smoothest action of any bolt action rifle, helped a little by their rotary magazine that does not drag on the bolt like the follower in a conventional magazine. Although this rifle would make someone a great lightweight deer rifle that could be used on all of the North American game animals, it is also likely to catch the attention of the collectors out there.
