Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “J. STEVENS A. & T. CO / CHICOPEE FALLS MASS. U.S.A.”. The left side of the chamber is marked with the serial number “32987”. The butt of the grip frame is marked with the serial number, “32987”. The left side of the grip frame is marked with the serial number, “32987” and “15”. The detachable wire-stock is serial-matching, marked on the lower tang, “32987”.

Sights/Optics: The barrel is installed with combination sights. The front sight is a globe sight with a beaded post and a blade on the top of the globe. The rear sight is a flip-up ladder sight, the slider has a small circular aperture and also has a large “V” notch at the top.
Stock Configuration and Condition: The grips are two-piece smooth wood panels. There is an in-line dovetail channel in the underside of the grip frame and a screw port on the backstrap where the included skeleton stock is fastened with a screw. The panels have some scattered little compressions, mainly along the rear edges. There are a couple of little tiny spots of finish loss. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips rate in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright and the rifling is sharp where not interrupted by erosion. There are some spots of erosion scattered in the bore, most noticeable at the midsection.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 85% of its original finish. The barrel has some scattered scuffs that have thinned the finish and taken on discoloration. There are some scatterd little nicks and tiny hairline scratches. There is some finsih loss on the sides of the barrel at the muzzle. The edges have some thinning and finish loss. The frame has some scattered draglines, a few scuffs, and a couple of tiny scratches. There is a bit of finsih loss on the backstrap from installation of the stock. Screws are lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this pistol rates in Very Good Plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: This pistol includes a detachable straight comb No. 3 style steel wire stock.
Our Assessment: This pocket rifle is J. Stevens & Tool Co.’s New Model No. 40. Pocket Rifle. Pockets were clearly longer back when this was manufactured, as the overall length of the firearm with the stock attached is about 29”. Thankfully, the stock is detachable. This pistol likely made a sincerely fun parlour gun or plinker, and will certainly make for one even today. The bore can still put lead downrange and the mechanics are sound, this will make a great addition to your collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
