Our Assessment: This M1 Carbine, manufactured in 1944 by Standard Products, is a rare and historically rich example, particularly due to its postwar European service and matching components. Standard Products, based in Port Clinton, Ohio, produced around 4% of all WWII carbines and, like most contractors, sourced parts from other manufacturers to meet quotas. The use of Underwood parts, barrel, bolt, slide, etc. is consistent with this collaborative production approach. What makes this rifle stand out is the “3683” stamp on the bolt, slide, and stock, matching the last four digits of the serial number, an extremely rare level of uniformity for an M1 Carbine, especially one that saw extended postwar use.

The Bavarian Rural Police markings on the receiver point to the carbine’s Cold War history, as many surplus U.S. carbines were transferred to West German and Austrian police forces after WWII. The “LGK OO” marking on the trigger group stands for “Landesgendarmeriekommando Oberösterreich” (Provincial Gendarmerie Command of Upper Austria), indicating it was issued to Austrian state police forces in that region. This police use likely contributed to the rifle’s preserved condition and retained matching components. Acquired through the Civilian Marksmanship Program in 2009, this carbine is not only a functional piece of WWII ordnance but also a rare and highly collectible firearm that saw Cold War service in an unusually complete configuration.
