Our Assessment: The U.S. Springfield Model 1903 rifle was the primary American service rifle of the early twentieth century and remained in widespread use through the First World War and into the interwar years. This example, manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1932, reflects late interwar production of the classic 1903 pattern with its ladder rear sight and traditional straight grip military stock. The receiver is properly marked “U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1903,” and the rifle is accompanied by a CMP certificate indicating release through the Civilian Marksmanship Program. The rifle retains approximately 90 percent of its original blued finish with some thinning visible on the front receiver ring and near the muzzle. Overall the rifle presents in Good condition as a service rifle that has seen arsenal refurbishment.

Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, the rifle retains the standard internal box magazine with magazine cut-off and the original 24 inch barrel fitted with a pinned blade front sight and Type 2 ladder rear sight. The bore remains coated in cosmoline, though the rifling appears sharp with no visible pitting or erosion. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9 out of 10, though it will require a thorough cleaning of the cosmoline before the rifle is fired.

The two piece walnut military stock retains the straight grip configuration with dual barrel bands and checkered steel buttplate. The wood shows scratches, compression dents, and scattered sanding marks consistent with arsenal work. A grafted repair is present on the forward right side of the forend, though no structural cracks are visible. Overall the stock rates in Good condition. Mechanically, the action functions correctly. This Springfield Model 1903 stands as a representative example of an interwar U.S. service rifle that has passed through CMP refurbishment and preservation.
