Markings: The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / ARMORY / MODEL 1903 / 1265695”. The left rear of the barrel is marked “WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS…CONNECTICUT U.S.A.” and “NICKEL STEEL / ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER”; the markings are covered by the sight bases. The safety is marked “SAFE READY” and the magazine cutoff is marked “ON OFF”. The top of the bolt handle is marked “N.S.” for nickel steel. The underside of the bolt handle is marked “3” and with a punch mark. The barrel band is marked “U”. The top of the front sight is marked “REDFIELD / PAT. PEND”. The right side of the rear sight is marked “HOFFMAN ARMS CO. / CLEVELAND, O.”
The underside of the extra buttplate is stamped with the previous owner’s name.
Barrel Length: The Heavy Target Barrel is approximately 30 inches long.
Sights / Optics: The front globe sight has a post insert installed. The insert can be replaced. The fully adjustable aperture sight is attached to the rear of the bolt body. It has an oversized eyepiece installed. The adjustment knobs function.
The barrel has 2 reverse dovetail sight bases installed. They are each ½ inch wide at the top. The rear base cantilevers over the front of the receiver.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The custom sporting stock has a pistol grip, fluted comb, plastic grip base, barrel band, 2 sling loops, 2 through bolts, checkering on the grip & forearm, and a checkered metal buttplate. The bottom of the forearm has slotted rail installed for the adjustable sling loop base. A palm rest is installed along a 5 inch aluminum rail. The rail is secured to the trigger guard and bottom metal tang. The wood shows scrapes and scratches that have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ½ inches from the face of the rear trigger and 14 inches from the face of the front trigger to the rear of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright; semi bright near the muzzle. The rifling is sharp & deep. There is some fouling near the muzzle that should clean up. There is light frosting in the grooves at the muzzle. The bore shows an M.E. of 0.0.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The metal shows scrapes (most are light) and some light scratches. The trigger guard shows discoloration and small scratches. The screw heads show use. The receiver markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.
Mechanics: The safety has been removed. The front trigger is set to break at about 4 ½ ounces.
The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a palm rest installed. The serrated wood shows several small scratches. The metal shows thinning but has been treated with cold blue. The treated areas show discoloration. Overall the palm rest is in about Very Good condition. The rifle comes with an extra Schuetzen style brass buttplate. It has been painted black. It shows scrapes & scratches that have removed portions of the paint finish. Overall it is in about Very Good Plus condition.
Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory Model 1903 was made back in 1924. It has since been turned into a Custom Target Rifle. The rifle now uses a 30 inch heavy Winchester barrel and double set triggers. The front trigger is set to break at about 4 ½ ounces. The rifle has target sights and sight bases installed. The rear sight base cantilevers over the receiver and the rear sight is attached to the rear of the bolt assembly. The forearm is set up with an adjustable sling mount and a folding palm rest is installed. This Custom Target Rifle looks nice and has a strong bore. It should shoot well and turn heads at the range.
