The refinished buttplate shows scratches, discoloration, and surface erosion. The nosecap and barrel band shows scrapes, small scratches and discoloration. The left edge of the forearm is missing some surface wood. The wood shows scrapes, scratches, and compression marks.  Some have damaged small portions of the surface wood. Most of these marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ½ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttstock. This stock rates in about Very Good Plus overall condition.

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The muzzle and grooves are grey and the rifling is deep. There is erosion present at the muzzle and  in the grooves. The bore shows an M.E. of 1.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains approximately 93% of its metal finish as refinished. Areas of oxidation show through the new finish. The metal shows scrapes, some small scratches, and discoloration from oxidation. The barrel shows a few small spots of light surface erosion. The trigger guard shows scratches and thinning. The screw heads show use. The receiver markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition as refinished.

Mechanics: The magazine follower and carrier are stuck in place. They do not place tension on the rounds and push them over & up to be fed into the action. The follower may just need a magazine follower spring, but we cannot be sure. The action functions otherwise. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory Model 1898 Krag was made back in December of 1901. It has since been refinished so it looks pretty good for being almost 120 years old. Luckily it still has nice deep markings on the receiver and a clear inspector’s cartouche on the stock. The rifle still has a good bore but the magazine has an issue. The magazine may need a new spring inorder to fire more than 1 round at a time.
