Sights / Optics: The front sight is a pinned blade set atop a raised base. The rifle uses a Model 1896 rear sight (see pages 158-159 of The American Krag Rifle and Carbine by Joe Poyer). The rear sight is an adjustable “U” notched escalator. The left side of the rear sight base is marked “3 4 5 6” for use with the escalator. The sight flips up to become a sight ladder marked from “7-18”.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has been replaced with a Model 1898 stock. This may have been done during an Arsenal Rebuild. The hardwood stock has a straight grip, cut out for the bolt handle, finger grooves, nosecap with bayonet lug, hole for the included cleaning rod, stacking loop, 2 sling loops, barrel band, and a metal buttplate. The buttplate shows heavy surface erosion. The nosecap and barrel band show scratches, thinning and discoloration. The wood shows numerous scrapes, scratches, and compression marks. Many of these marks have damaged small portions of the surface wood. These marks have been oiled over.  The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Good to Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original to Rebuild

Bore Condition: The muzzle & grooves are grey and the rifling is deep. There is erosion in the bore. It is more prominent in the grooves. The bore shows an M.E. of 3.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 70% of its metal finish. The metal shows scrapes, scratches, and discoloration from oxidation. The magazine shows light surface erosion. Some of the screw heads show heavy use. The receiver markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good to Very Good condition as an antique.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory Model 1892 Krag Rifle was made during the first few months of initial Krag production. It is a (bit) confusing but very interesting rifle. It is a Model 1892, but it is correctly marked “1894” on the receiver. According to page 254 of The American Krag Rifle and Carbine by Joe Poyer, Model 1892 receivers are marked “1894”. This 1892 Krag Rifle was made way back in April of 1894. It is 127 years old and can still do lots of work. The rifle has been rebuilt and now uses a Model 1898 stock and a Model 1896 rear sight. This collectible Model 1892 Krag is an antique so No FFL is required…unless you live in California.
