Our Assessment: This is a Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jørgensen bolt-action rifle chambered in .30-40 Krag manufactured in 1899 and qualifies as an antique. Originally produced as the U.S. military’s standard service rifle at the turn of the 20th century, the Krag was prized for its smooth action, unique side-loading magazine, and excellent workmanship. This example has been sporterized from its original military configuration, featuring a shortened barrel and modified stock, likely intended for hunting or general-purpose use in the early 20th century. Despite the alterations, this rifle remains a mechanically interesting and historically important piece from the transitional era between black powder and smokeless military arms. Make sure to inspect our detailed pictures to get a better idea of the firearm. -C.R.
