Markings: There is no import mark.
Receiver: “U.S. RIFLE / CAL. .30 M1 / SPRINGFIELD / ARMORY / 698295”.
Trigger Group: “IHC D6528290”- An International Harvester part (page 90 of Joe Poyer’s M1 GARAND 1936 to 1957, 6th Edition).
Hammer: “C46008-7 SA”– A Springfield part (page 98).
Safety: “SA-11” –  A Springfield part (page 103).
Follower: Unmarked – Used by all 4 manufacturers (page 83).
Receiver Leg: “C 1 9 B”, and “D 28291 17” – Correct for the Springfield serial number (page 29). Also marked “A4 / 2-65” in electro pencil. This indicates an Arsenal Rebuild at the Anniston Arsenal in February of 1965.
Op Rod: “35382 6 SA” – The “D” prefix was lost when the op rod was machined during the Arsenal Rebuild. A Springfield part (page 71).
Barrel: “SA 6535448 10 64 Y59”, “P”, “M” and with a Defense “Eagle” acceptance stamp – A Springfield part (pages 61-63).
Bolt:“D28287-19 SA / 0-15”- A Springfield part (page 53).
The stock and sights are described below.

Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight set between two protective wings. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice and “HRA-W”. The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of two and “WCE” on the edge.

Stock Configuration & Condition:  The face of the grip is marked with a “P” proof. The left side of the butt is marked with an Arsenal Rebuild stamp from the Ogden Arsenal “O.G. in a box”. It is next to a faded stamping that begins with “G”.
The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nose caps, a stacking loop, two sling loops and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage in the butt. The buttplate is still covered in the long term storage wrap. We did not view it. The stock has been reinforced. Four pin heads are visible from the reinforcement just ahead of the grip. One pin head is visible at the bottom right of the grip. The wood shows scrapes & scratches as well as areas of light discoloration from the storage bag. The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original to Arsenal Rebuild

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is deep. There is no erosion. The bore shows an M.E. of -0.2 (negative 0.2). The throat shows a T.E. of 2. 

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The metal shows scuffs, light scrapes, and light discoloration from the storage bag. The markings on the metal are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with its original shipping box, long term storage “white bag”, shipping invoice & copy, and a purchase order. The box shows scrapes, tears, tape residue, and discoloration. It is marked with an “Oct. 1971” date. It is in about Good condition. The white bag and interior paper have been cut open. The white bag is marked with the rifle’s serial number in black ink. It is stamped “RIFLE US CAL 30 M1 W/E / 1 EA CC-A / A02/65 A4” and with other info. The white bag is in about Fair to Good condition. The purchase order is marked with the rifle’s serial number in ink. It is dated “78 Oct 23”. The purchase order and shipping invoice are marked with the same recipient name (buyer). The shipping invoice is from the “ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL”. Please see photos to read these documents. These items show discoloration and creasing. The shipping invoice & copy are in about Very Good Plus condition. The purchase order is also torn along one edge. It is in about Good condition.

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand was made back in 1942. It was Arsenal Rebuilt at the Anniston Arsenal in February of 1965 and is marked accordingly on the receiver leg. Shortly thereafter it was placed into long term storage in its “white bag”. In 1978 the rifle was purchased through the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM); the previous version of the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). It was purchased & shipped from the Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island Illinois.
This M1 Garand is in great shape with a strong bright bore and great markings. It still has part of its storage paper attached to it, so we’re fairly sure it hasn’t been out to the range.
It comes in its original shipping box & “white bag”. The rifle also comes with original invoice/shipping paperwork. Good luck.
