Caliber: 7.62 NATO (7.62x51mm).
The 7.62 NATO and the commercial .308 Winchester (7.62x51mm) cartridges are very similar and can be loaded into rifles chambered for the other round. The Winchester .308 is loaded to higher pressures than 7.62 NATO. Check with a qualified gunsmith to determine if .308 can be fired regularly through this rifle.

Trigger Group: “D28290-12-SA”- A Springfield part (page 90 of Joe Poyer’s M1 GARAND 1936 to 1957, 6th Edition). The bottom is marked “USN” in faded paint.
Hammer: “C46008-7 SA”– A Springfield part (page 98).
Safety: “SA-11” – A Springfield part (page 103).
Follower: “8” – A Springfield part (page 83).
Receiver Leg: “R E P 1 9 B”, “LL”, and “D 28291-14 SA” – Correct for the Springfield serial number (page 29).
Op Rod:“NM” on the top and “7790722-RA” – A Springfield National Match part (page 71).
Bolt: “D28287-2SA / RE4D” – A Springfield part (page 53).
Barrel:“SA 11010457 SPL 9 65 MD50”, “P”, “M”, with a Defense “Eagle” acceptance stamp, and “7.62 MM”– A Springfield barrel (pages 61-63) chambered in 7.62 NATO.
The stock and sights are described below.
Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches
Sights / Optics: National Match (NM) sights are installed. The right side of the front sight is marked “NM / 062”. The windage knob is marked “NM”. The right rear sight wing is marked “NM/2”. The face of the aperture’s riser is marked “NM”.
The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight set between two protective wings. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice and “BME”. The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of two and “WCE”.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The handguards are bedded to the stock with epoxy. The top, bottom, and interior of the stock are built up with epoxy to better fit the action and trigger group. The metal tip has been removed from the front of the forearm band and is no longer used to lock the stock into the front handguard band.
The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nose caps, stacking loop, two sling loops and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage in the butt. The buttplate shows small scratches and discoloration from oxidation. The left side of the stock shows a long horizontal crack that has been repaired. This area also shows an edge repair. The right side of the butt has tape with faded markings on it. The bottom of the forearm shows heavy tape residue. The wood shows several scrapes, scratches, and compression marks. The LOP measures 13 ? inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition as refurbished.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright; semi bright at the muzzle. The rifling is sharp. There is some fouling in the grooves near the muzzle which should clean up a bit. There is no erosion. The bore shows an M.E. of 0.9.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish as refinished. The metal shows scapes, scuffs, and light thinning on the leading edges of the metal. The gas cylinder lock & screw show thinning. The right side of the receiver shows a thinning consistent with cycling. The right side of the receiver shows oxidation just above the wood line. The rear of the receiver shows discoloration. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition as refinished.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a green nylon sling. It shows light discoloration as well as oxidation & scrapes on the metal. Overall it is in about Very Good Plus condition.
Our Assessment: This rifle started life back in 1941 as a Springfield Armory M1 Garand. It is now an M1 Garand Navy MK2 MOD 1 (Mark 2 Model 1). An M1 Garand converted to 7.62 NATO by the installation of a Military contract 7.62x51mm barrel.
The rifle has been refinished and the stock has been bedded. The rifle has a strong bright bore, National Match (NM) Sights, and an NM Op Rod. This collectible M1 Garand Navy should do well out at the range. Good luck.
