Trigger Guard: “C 40625” – A Springfeild part (page 92).

Safety: “C 46015-4” on the upper right –  A Springfield part (page 103).
Follower: “2” – This “Top Hat” follower is a Springfield part (page 83).
Receiver Leg: “B 2”, “M”, and “D 28291” – Correct for the Springfield serial number (page 29).
Op Rod: “D35382-1-SA” – A Springfield part (page 71).

The stock and sights are described below.

Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches

Sights / Optics:  The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight set between two protective wings. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice. The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of two and “UP arrow DOWN arrow / BATTLE triangle RANGE”.

Stock Configuration & Condition:  The face of the grip is marked with a “circled P” proof. The left side of the stock, above the trigger, is marked with a “boxed” Springfield Arsenal Rebuild stamp containing “S.A / G.H.S.” (page 134). This is next to an Ordnance Department “crossed cannons” cartouche.
The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nose caps, a stacking loop, two sling loops and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage in the butt. The right side of the forearm shows deep vertical compression marks. The wood shows several other scrapes, scratches, and compression marks. Some of the marks have damaged small portions of the surface wood. These marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original to Rebuild

Bore Condition: Most of the bore is semi bright. The area near the muzzle is light grey. The rifling is deep. There is fouling and intermittent light erosion near the muzzle. There is a ring of more prominent fouling around the gas port hole. The fouling should clean up some. The bore shows an M.E. of 1. The throat shows a T.E. of 2.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 92% of its metal finish. The gas tube has been polished clean of its finish. It shows several scratches.  The metal shows several scuffs, light scrapes, and handling marks. The right side of the receiver and front of the bolt show light thinning consistent with cycling the action. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: A letter and data sheet from Scott A. Duff Publications are included in this auction. Mr. Duff is a respected M1 Garand author, collector, and researcher. Please see our photos to read and inspect both the letter and data sheet.
The letter explains James Earl “Mac” McCullom’s importance in M1 Garand research and history. The letter also states “Springfield Armory, M1 Rifle, s/n 14288 is from the personal collection of the late James Earl “Mac” McCullom…His M1 rifle collection was one of the finest ever assembled”.
The letter and data sheet are both signed by Scott A. Duff.
Both show creasing and are in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.

Our Assessment: This Early Springfield Armory M1 Garand was made back in 1939. It is marked with early Springfield stampings and Drawing Numbers. The markings on the metal and wood are deep making this a desirable M1 Garand.
This M1 Garand comes from the personal collection of James Earl “Mac” McCullom who passed away in 2008. Mr. McCullom was one of the foremost researchers and collectors of the M1 Garand rifle. He compiled a massive M1 Garand database for use by other collectors and researchers. His input included hundreds of thousands of entries relating to all aspects of the M1 Garand rifle. A letter from Scott A. Duff is included in this auction. Mr. Duff is a respected M1 Garand author, collector, and researcher in his own right. The letter explains Mr. McCullom’s importance in M1 Garand research and history. It also verifies that this M1 Garand is from Mr. McCullom’s personal collection.
