Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand, manufactured in December 1941, stands as a remarkable piece of American military history, produced just as the United States entered World War II. Sold by the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM) as a Service Grade rifle in 1990, it was later professionally refinished by Fulton Armory in 1993, a respected name in Garand restoration. The rifle’s mechanical condition is excellent, with a bore gauging a muzzle reading of 1 and throat erosion of 1, both indicators of minimal wear and excellent shooting potential. The restoration preserved its functional integrity while giving it a clean, fresh presentation worthy of both collectors and serious marksmen.
The M1 Garand was the first standard-issue semi-automatic rifle for the U.S. military, designed by John Garand and adopted in 1936. Its semi-automatic action gave American infantry a significant advantage in rate of fire over bolt-action rifles used by many adversaries. General George S. Patton famously praised the M1 as “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” highlighting its impact on the battlefield. The December 1941 production date and high-quality refurbishment make this particular rifle an excellent example of a wartime Garand with strong historical and functional value.
