Trigger Group:”W 4” and “D28290-14-SA” – A Springfield part (page 90 of Joe Poyer’s M1 GARAND 1936 to 1957, 6th Edition).
Hammer: “HRA 5546008”– A Harrington & Richardson part (page 98).
Safety: Unmarked with a round top – The marking may have been lost to refinishing (page 104).
Follower: Unmarked – Used by all 4 manufacturers (page 83).
Receiver Leg: “G 111 A” and “D 28291-17” –Correct for serial number (page 29).
Op Rod: “..35382 SA” – A Springfield part. The first 2 digits were lost during an Arsenal Rebuild (page 71).
Barrel: “CBI 308 11010 1-10 03/19 5K .098” – A March, 2019 dated .308 Criterion barrel with a 1 in 10 twist.
Bolt: “D28287-1 / W.R.A.” – A Winchester part (page 53).
The stock and sights are described below.
Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight set between two protective wings. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice and “HRA-W”. The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of 2 and “NI C”.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The left side of the stock, above the trigger, is marked with a large “boxed” CMP cartouche which contains “CMP / eagle holding arrows”. The new production hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nose caps, a stacking loop, two sling loops and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage in the butt. The wood shows only a few light handling marks. The LOP measures 13 1/8 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Excellent overall condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Original to Rebuild
Bore Condition: The bore shines. There is some light fouling in the grooves near the muzzle which should clean up. The rifling is sharp & deep. There is no visible erosion. The bore shows an M.E. of 0.0.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its metal finish. The metal shows various scuffs & a few small light scrapes. Most of the markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a “March 11, 2020” dated CMP Certificate that lists the rifle’s serial number and “Model: RM1CUSTOMSPL .308”. The certificate is in about Excellent condition. The rifle comes in a tan hard plastic case that is marked on both sides with “ CIVILIAN MARKSMANSHIP / PROGRAM” surrounding “CMP / eagle holding arrows”, and “CMP / www.theCMP.org”. The interior of the case has foam pieces that show 1 small tear. The case has 4 latches and 4 reinforced holes that can be used to lock the case. The case shows a few scrapes and spots of discoloration (production blemishes). It is in about Fine condition.
The rifle comes with several accessories. The 28 clips are in about Excellent condition. The green canvas sling, yellow chamber flag, cleaning tools, single round sled, and reproduction bandolier are all in about Excellent condition. The rifle also comes with books, promotional paperwork and an owner’s manual. They are in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition. Please see photos to visually confirm.
Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand was originally made back in 1942. It has been completely rebuilt by the CMP using USGI parts, a new CMP stock, and a new Criterion barrel chambered in .308. The rifle has been completely refinished and is in Excellent condition. It looks great and still retains lots of its original markings. This M1 Garand comes in a nice CMP case with a ton of accessories. This is a Nice package for the collector who enjoys shooting.
