The LOP measures 13.25” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. This CMP replacement stock and handguards show very little handling wear with only a few very light scratches and very small compressions. There are no chips or cracks. Overall the wood is in Excellent condition. The buttplate similarly has almost no wear and is in Like New condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Original and Refinished.
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is well defined. There is minor visible pitting/erosion mainly in the last third of the bore. The CMP inspection tag gives a muzzle reading of 2 and a throat reading of 1. Our gauges show a muzzle of 2 and a throat of 1-1.5. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 7.5/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 94% of its metal finish. The exposed portion of the barrel is showing thinning in the finish. The crown of the muzzle has lost its finish. The edges of the trigger guard show finish loss as do the friction surfaces of the bolt and the receiver. The finish on the original non refinished parts is beginning to turn or has turned green with age. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. The screw for the rear sight has some surface rust developing in the slot. Overall this rifle is in about Very Good + to Excellent condition as a CMP Service grade rifle.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a green canvas sling, yellow chamber flag, en bloc clip, CMP thank you card, manual, Armorer’s inspection tag, and CMP hard case.
Our Assessment: The M1 Garand, designed by Canadian-born John C. Garand and manufactured by Springfield Armory, holds an iconic place in American military history. Serving as the standard-issue rifle for the U.S. military during World War II and the Korean War, it was the first semi-automatic rifle to be generally issued to the infantry of any nation. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, this gas-operated, rotating bolt rifle gave American troops a distinct advantage in firefights, allowing for a rate of fire that bolt-action rifles simply couldn’t match. The M1 Garand’s design was revolutionary for its time, with an internal magazine fed by an eight-round “en bloc” clip. The rifle automatically ejected the clip with a distinctive “ping” sound when empty, signaling the need for a reload. This sound became iconic, a signature auditory clue of the weapon’s presence on the battlefield. While the fixed magazine and clip system did present some limitations, they were largely outweighed by the rifle’s advantages in speed and firepower. Today, the M1 Garand is a coveted piece for collectors, competitive shooters, and history enthusiasts alike. It is often seen in vintage military shooting competitions and has become a popular choice for hunters who appreciate its historical significance. With its blend of innovative design, rugged reliability, and proven effectiveness, the M1 Garand is more than just a relic of the past; it’s a symbol of American ingenuity and the bravery of those who carried it into battle.
This example began its life after world war two in late 1953. In 2016 it was sold by the CMP as a Service grade rifle. To review “Service Grade Rifles will show less wear and a better cosmetic appearance than a Field or Rack Grade. Cosmetic condition will be good to very good. Rifle finish may vary, exhibiting normal wear and/or color variation among the metal parts. May have some visible pitting, frosting, or other minor cosmetic deformity on the metal parts. Stock sets may consist of any species of wood (or combination thereof); and could exhibit dents, dings, scratches, and/or structurally insignificant cracks. New production, commercial stock sets may be used, and will likely exhibit signs of wear and prior use. Bores will be bright, and free of any major defect that would be visible to the naked eye. The exterior circumference of the barrel crown may be nicked, dented, or dinged, but such deformity will not extend into the bore. Service Grade muzzles will gauge “3 or less” and the throat erosion will gauge less than 5. A reasonable allowance for gauge tolerances will be afforded.”-CMP. This rifle is in Excellent overall condition, has a new stock set and a better than grade level bore with plenty of life left in it.
