The stock and sights are described below.

Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight set between two protective wings. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice . The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of two and “UP arrow DOWN arrow / BATTLE triangle RANGE”. The face of the aperture riser is marked “B8868-1”. This is a USGI part (page 45).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The left side of the stock (above the trigger) is marked with “boxed” Springfield Ordnance cartouche “S.A. / S.P.G.”, which is the correct cartouche for the Springfield serial number (page 134). The face of the grip is marked with a “circled P” proof.
The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nose caps, stacking loop, two sling loops and a replacement metal buttplate without a hinged door. There are 2 storage holes below the buttplate; this is an M1 Garand stock. The buttplate shows scrapes & discoloration. The belly of the stock is missing a piece of surface wood next to the bottom metal. The wood shows light scrapes, small scratches, light compression marks and areas of discoloration. The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original to Rebuild

Bore Condition: The lands are bright and the grooves are grey. The rifling is deep. There is erosion in the grooves. There are intermittent patches of more prominent erosion in the front ¼ of the bore. The bore shows an M.E. of 2. The throat shows a T.E. of 1.5.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The metal shows scuffs, light scrapes and small handling marks. The gas tube has had its finish removed. It shows scrapes & light oxidation. The left side of the receiver shows an area of light thinning. The right side of the receiver and bolt show thinning consistent with cycling the action. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand was made back in 1940 and has a 5 digit serial number. At some point it was rebuilt & refinished but still retains nice markings on the metal and on the wood. This is a nice looking M1 Garand for your collection.
