The LOP measures 13” inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The wood shows scattered compressions and scratches. The most notable marr is on the left side under the rear sight. The rear of the stock shows some very small chips around the edges. There are no cracks. The metal butt plate has lost its finish and shows many scratches and marks especially around the edges. The door spring is strong.  Overall the stock set on this rifle is in about Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is gray and the rifling is well defined. There is visible erosion and pitting throughout the bore. Our gauges show a muzzle reading of about 3+ and a throat erosion reading of about 4.5. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains 96% of its metal finish. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show minor rub wear. The receiver shows some surface rust freckling forming on the rear bevel. The finish also shows some surface level lines scattered throughout. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in Good-Good+ condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a DCM Certificate of authenticity  and manual.

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand was manufactured in October 1944 and retains a correct August 1944 dated barrel, placing the rifle squarely in late-WWII production. The rifle later passed through a December 1963 inspection at Red River Army Depot, a common Cold War era refurbishment point where many service rifles were evaluated and maintained for continued military reserve use. It features a desirable GAW marked walnut stock, the inspection mark of Col. George A. Woody, Springfield Armory’s commanding officer from 1943-1944, whose cartouche is strongly associated with wartime Garand production.

The rifle was eventually released to the civilian market through the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM) and sold in 2001, continuing the long tradition of placing historic U.S. service rifles in the hands of American shooters and collectors. With its correct WWII barrel date, period GAW stock, and documented arsenal inspection history, this Garand represents an authentic example of a late-war service rifle that later remained in the U.S. military supply system during the Cold War before finally entering civilian ownership.
