Stock Configuration & Condition:  The wood stock has a traditional Semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, two sling loops, stacking ring, and a checkered metal butt plate with storage compartment.  The LOP measures 13” inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The wood has been sanded and refinished and a brass pin installed above the trigger. The finish shows some compressions, surface level lines, and a few small chips. The most notable chip is on the left side of the stock just in front of the bottom metal. There are no cracks. There is a notable compression on the forward handguard just in front of the band. The metal butt plate has been re-finished and shows some rub wear around the edges with some semi-sharp checkering. The door spring is strong. Overall the stock is in Good+ condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Re-finished

Bore Condition: The bore is very bright and the rifling is defined. The lands show some very minor pitting/erosion. Our gauges show a muzzle of 1.5 and a throat of 1.5. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.25/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show very minor rub wear. The majority of the finish loss on this rifle is thinning from the edges of the sight wings. The stacking ring shows surface rust.  The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall the rifle is in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a manual and DCM Certificate of authenticity.

Our Assessment: This M1 Garand was manufactured by Springfield Armory in 1954 and is fitted with a matching Springfield barrel dated May 1954. Rifles from this late production period were manufactured during the closing years of U.S. Garand production and many saw continued service throughout the Cold War era. This example was later inspected at Letterkenny Army Depot in September 1965, part of the Army’s ongoing arsenal maintenance program that kept Garands in serviceable condition long after their initial manufacture.

Following its military service life, the rifle was released to the civilian market through the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM) in 2003. The DCM, predecessor to today’s Civilian Marksmanship Program, distributed surplus U.S. military rifles to qualified American citizens to promote marksmanship training and firearm safety. A 1954 rifle retaining its correct period barrel along with documented Letterkenny arsenal inspection represents a solid and historically interesting example of a late-production Garand that served well beyond its original era.
