Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, stacking loop, double sling loops, and a metal butt plate with hinged door for storage. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The wood shows lines, scratches, compressions, and chips throughout the surface of the wood. The rear section of the rear upper handguard shows a small crack. The most notable marr is on the right side in front and below the charging handle. The butt plate sits proud over the top of the comb most likely as a result of the stock being sanded and refinished. The butt plate has lost its finish, shows dulled checkering and has developed surface rust. The door spring is still strong. Overall the wood is in Fair condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: This rifle had the barrel replaced with a Criterion Barrel in 2023. The bore is bright, the rifling is sharp, there is no erosion in the bore. Our gauges show a muzzle of 0 and a throat erosion of 0. If this barrel had been fired it was very little. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The receiver and trigger group are beginning to turn green with age. The gas cylinder and front sight wings show the majority of the finish loss. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show some minor rub wear. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in Good+ to Very Good condition with a Fair stock and what is essentially a brand new barrel.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: This Springfield M1 Garand was originally manufactured in 1954 and later re-barreled in 2023 with a brand-new Criterion barrel, restoring the rifle’s shootability while maintaining its authentic postwar configuration. The stock is marked “BTAF,” a marking associated with rifles sent to Turkey around 1972, when roughly 300,000 Garands were provided under U.S. military assistance programs to strengthen NATO allies during the Cold War. Though documentation is not included, the rifle’s configuration and condition suggest it was later reimported and re-barreled by the CMP, combining arsenal history with modern service-grade restoration.

The M1 Garand remains one of the most iconic U.S. service rifles, praised for its reliability, accuracy, and eight-round semi-automatic operation that gave American troops a distinct battlefield advantage. General George S. Patton famously called it “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” a sentiment well reflected in this rifle’s blend of Cold War heritage and fresh craftsmanship. With its new Criterion barrel, clean bore, and historically significant stock, this 1954 Springfield stands as both a shooter’s rifle and a tangible link to the international reach of the Garand legacy.
