Our Assessment: This CMP Expert Grade M1 Garand was originally manufactured in February 1942, making it an early World War II production rifle. As part of the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) Expert Grade refurbishment process, this rifle was rebarreled with a Criterion barrel in 2022 and fully refinished by the CMP the same year. The Criterion barrel ensures excellent accuracy and longevity, and the rifle is in excellent condition with a near-perfect bore, making it a superb example of a properly restored M1 Garand.
The M1 Garand, designed by John C. Garand and adopted by the U.S. military in 1936, was the first standard-issue semi-automatic rifle for American troops. It saw extensive use during World War II, the Korean War, and even into the early years of Vietnam before being replaced by the M14. Praised by General George S. Patton as “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” the M1 Garand provided U.S. soldiers with a significant advantage in firepower over enemy forces armed primarily with bolt-action rifles. Its eight-round en-bloc clip system allowed for faster follow-up shots, giving American troops superior sustained firepower in combat.
Adding to this rifle’s history, the current owner asserts that it was used by Tony Simonetti of Greenville, SC, to win a National Match. Competitive shooting has long been a significant part of the M1 Garand’s legacy, with events such as the CMP National Matches at Camp Perry keeping the rifle in active use among civilian marksmen. The CMP’s Expert Grade rifles are an excellent choice for shooters who want a historically significant firearm with modern refinements for accuracy and performance. Whether as a collector’s piece or a competition rifle, this February 1942 M1 Garand represents a connection to both military history and the ongoing tradition of marksmanship.
