Our Assessment: The Springfield Armory M1A is the civilian counterpart to the legendary M14 rifle, offering the same rugged action, proven reliability, and full-power .308/7.62 NATO chambering that made its predecessor a mainstay in U.S. military service. This early-production example from 1979 was built during a time when Springfield was sourcing many of its parts directly from U.S. military surplus, resulting in rifles that closely mirrored the original service M14s in both quality and component compatibility. The 22-inch barrel provides excellent ballistic performance, while the National Match front sight and military aperture rear sight deliver a precise and repeatable sight picture. The attached Picatinny rail system allows for modern optics mounting without altering the rifle’s heritage features.

This rifle remains in Excellent condition, with about 99% of its original parkerized finish intact and only light marks from careful handling and storage. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and minimal wear, rating 9/10. The walnut stock shows some minor compressions and a scratch on the comb, and it appears to have been sanded and refinished, leaving it solid and well-protected. The composite handguard has some paint chipping but remains structurally sound. Mechanically, the rifle is in proper working order, and it includes a 20-round magazine and the Picatinny rail mount. For those seeking a pre-ban, early-production Springfield M1A with the solid feel and quality of original G.I. componentry, this is an excellent opportunity to acquire a rifle that’s as capable on the range as it is desirable to collectors.
