Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory SOCOM 16, manufactured in 2010, is a compact, tactical evolution of the iconic M1A rifle, chambered in .308 Winchester (7.62x51mm NATO). Designed for maneuverability in close-quarters situations, it features a 16.25 inch barrel with a factory muzzle brake to help reduce recoil and muzzle rise. This variant sits in the Troy modular chassis system adding AR15 pistol grip and stock compatibility, and also the quad rail forend allows for easy attachment of bi-pods, lights, and other accessories. Built for versatility, it merges the rugged durability of the M14 design with contemporary ergonomics and controls.
This particular rifle also has a MAGPUL ACS stock with ambi cheek shelves for comfort, battery storage tubes, and a storage compartment. The stock can be locked into position with the tab to reduce movement and noise and includes a rubber but pad to reduce felt recoil. Its sturdy construction and thoughtful ergonomics make it ideal for both range use and defensive scenarios. The pairing of Springfield’s SOCOM platform with the Troy chassis results in a highly capable rifle that blends traditional battle rifle performance with modern tactical features.
