Our Assessment: The Springfield Armory M2 was the definitive U.S. military small-bore training rifle of the pre–WWII era. Produced from 1933 to 1942, it was designed to replicate the handling and function of the M1903 Springfield service rifle while using economical .22 LR ammunition for training new recruits. The M2 featured a 23.5″ barrel, aperture rear sight, and a robust bolt action, all crafted to the same high standards of precision as Springfield’s service rifles.

This example, manufactured sometime in the 1933–42 production window. As a C&R-eligible U.S. military trainer, it is both collectible and shootable, offering a direct link to how American servicemen prepared for war in the 1930s and early 1940s. For collectors of U.S. martial arms or dedicated rimfire enthusiasts, the M2 is one of the more desirable .22 training rifles produced.
