The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The wood shows scattered lines and compressions consistent with an original stock from 1955. There are no visible cracks. Both the handguards and stock have chips from the edges. The rear upper handguard has a carving of what appears to be “X-NJ”. The buttplate shows finish loss, surface rust and discoloration from age. The door spring is strong and the checkering is worn. Overall the stock is in Fair+ to Good condition.

Type of Finish:  Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with Very well defined rifling. There is some barely  visible erosion scattered in the bore mainly on the edges of the lands. Our gauges show a muzzle reading of 2+ and a throat erosion of about 3. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains 90% of its metal finish. The bolt shows finish loss on the friction surfaces. The surfaces of the rifle are starting to develop oxidation freckles. There are some minor scattered handling marks throughout the finish. The finish has turned brown with finish loss on the edges. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in about Good+ condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle.  As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a manual from the CMP.

Our Assessment: This M1 Garand made in 1955 is a significant piece of American military history, as it represents one of the last years of production for this iconic battle rifle, which served extensively during World War II and the Korean War.  The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), which sells surplus military rifles to qualified U.S. citizens, sold this specific M1 Garand. This rifle was most likely sold as a field grade. Field Grade rifles are typically sold in “as-is” condition and are functional but show moderate wear, both mechanically and cosmetically. This level of grading often includes rifles that may have some pitting, worn finishes, or mismatched parts, though they remain serviceable and shootable. This example shows a little wear in the barrel and cosmetically is in Good+ condition with an aged look. The owner asserts “ you are bidding on a rare 5.7mil serial range Springfield Armory Garand” to explain the rarity of this rifle “There are approximately 100,000 Springfield Garands in the 6 million serial number range, but there are only 6,152 Springfield Garands in the 5.7 million range and THIS IS ONE OF THEM”. To better understand this M1 please see our high quality photos via the link and best of luck with your bidding!!!-R.L.
