Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked “U.S. / MODEL 1899. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY. 279142”. The rear of the bolt handle is marked with 2 partial stampings. The barrel band is marked “U”. The bottom of the grip is marked “F” and with a “circled P” proof. The left side of the stock, above the trigger, is marked with a boxed inspection cartouche “JSA / 1900” (J.S. Adams, see page 62 of The American Krag Rifle and Carbine by Joe Poyer).

Barrel Length: Approximately 22 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a pinned blade atop a raised base. The rear sight is a Model 1901 Carbine sight. When down it is a “U” notched blade attached to a sliding escalator assembly. The left side of the rear sight base is marked “C” for Carbine, “and “1 2 3 B 4 5” for use with the escalator. The “B” indicates the location for “battle sight”. The sight flips up to become a sight ladder that uses a sliding “U” notched blade as well as a separate “U” notch at the top of the ladder. The bottom of the ladder is marked with a very small “C” which indicates it is a Carbine sight. The sight ladder is marked from “1-23”. For photos and more info see page 105 of Lt Col. William S. Stock Configuration & Condition: This Model 1899 Carbine stock uses a Model 1899 handguard. The hardwood stock has a straight grip, cut out for the bolt handle, finger grooves, barrel band, and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage. The buttplate shows scratches, discoloration from oxidation, and light surface erosion. The barrel band shows scrapes and discoloration from oxidation. The left side of the stock is missing a piece of edge wood next to the receiver and magazine side plate. The left side of the grip shows deep scrapes. The wood shows other scrapes & scratches. Some have damaged small portions of surface wood. The LOP measures 13 ½ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is grey and the rifling is deep. There is erosion throughout; more prominent in the grooves and at the muzzle. The bore shows an M.E. of 2.5.

Overall Condition: At some point this rifle was refinished but only a small amount of the blue finish remains. The majority of the blue finish has been lost to oxidation. The barrel and trigger guard show scratches, discoloration from oxidation, and light surface erosion. The receiver & magazine show scrapes, thinning, discoloration from oxidation, and surface erosion. The screw heads show heavy use and discoloration. Most of the receiver markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory Model 1899 Krag Carbine was made back in September of 1900. It is a true Model 1899 Krag Carbine not a Conversion as it is marked “1899” on the receiver and there were no Model 1899 Krag Rifles made; only Carbines. The rifle is 120 years old and is in good shape with a bore that can put lots of .30-40 Krag downrange. It even has deep markings on the metal and wood. Model 1899 Krag Carbines are scarce. Only 36,000 were ever produced so don’t we see many in our shop. This one should add to your Military or Krag collection. For more on this Model 1899 Krag Carbine see pages 77 to 79 of Lt Col.
