Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “44 Magnum”. The right side of the barrel is marked “Mountain Gun”. The yoke cut is marked with the serial and model numbers. The right side of the frame had the marcas registradas but they are gone. The sideplate has a large S&W monogram logo. The butt is marked with the serial number. The yoke and sides of the grip frame have inspection marks. The interior of the ejector rod shroud is marked “S”.
Barrel Length: 4″
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated blade with a green fiber optic insert and is pinned to a serrated ramp base which is integral to the barrel rib. The rear sight is a square notched leaf in a S&W micrometer click base that is adjustable for windage and elevation. The topstrap, under the rear sight, is drilled and tapped for a scope mount (none included).
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip is a one-piece black rubber S&W branded Hogue monogrip with finger grooves and their pebble texture. There are a few light scuffs, most noticeable on the bottom. There are some light handling marks. There are no rips or tears. Overall, the grips are in Fine Plus condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 95% of its metal finish. The cylinder has a turn line. There are some swirl marks and streaks from abrasive cleaning and from use and storage. There are a few scattered scuffs that have caused smooth spots, some of the most noticeable are on the left of the barrel. There are some small little nicks, mostly on the trigger guard. There is some thinning on the case-colored hammer and trigger. The screw heads are sharp to lightly worn with strong slots. The markings are light due to abrasive cleaning, the monogram logo is nearly invisible and the marcas registradas is gone. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder lockup has almost no play on each of the six chambers. The double-action trigger is smooth and the single-action is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The 629 has been made in a variety of configurations since 1979 filling just about any role that could be asked of a .44 Magnum revolver. This example is the 629-4 Mountain Gun, it has a 4″ barrel, Hogue monogrip, adjustable rear sight, fiber optic front sight, and a stainless finish. As the name suggests, this would be a great carry gun when hiking where you may encounter predators. The .44 Magnum is a stout round and will be good protection against just about anything you’ll encounter in North America. The gun is in Fine condition with a few scattered light marks, a great bore, and strong mechanics. If you’re after a powerful revolver for your outdoor adventures, this is a great gun to pick up.
