Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 617-4 K-22 Masterpiece represents the stainless steel evolution of one of Smith & Wesson’s most respected rimfire revolver lineages. Descended from the classic K-22 target revolvers, the Model 617 was engineered to provide target-grade accuracy, excellent balance, and long-term durability in a .22 Long Rifle platform. The full-lug 4 inch barrel places this revolver squarely in the category of a versatile trainer and field revolver, offering excellent sight radius and controllability while maintaining compact handling.
Configured with a 10-shot swing-out cylinder, this Model 617-4 delivers extended capacity without sacrificing the smooth double-action and crisp single-action trigger characteristics that define Smith & Wesson K-frame revolvers. The adjustable micrometer rear sight and Patridge front blade support precise aiming, while the stainless construction and case-hardened hammer and trigger reflect Smith & Wesson’s focus on longevity and refined mechanical feel. This example shows honest use consistent with careful ownership, retaining strong finish, a bright bore with sharp rifling, and correct mechanical function throughout.
As a modern-production K-22 Masterpiece, this Model 617-4 stands as a highly practical and enjoyable rimfire revolver that closely mirrors the handling of centerfire K-frame Smith & Wessons. Whether appreciated for training, target shooting, or general rimfire use, it remains a well-balanced and mechanically sound example of Smith & Wesson’s enduring commitment to precision revolver design.
