Markings: The left of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”, the right is marked “41 MAGNUM”. The side plate is marked with the S&W monogram logo and the right of the frame is marked with the four-line marcas registradas address. The crane-cut is marked with the serial N748524″ and “MOD 57” , the butt of the grip frame is also marked with the serial number. The crane and sides of the grip frame have inspection marks.

Barrel Length: 4” Pinned

Sights / Optics:  The front sight is a serrated ramped blade with orange insert integral to a raised rise in the rib. The rear sight is a flat top rectangular notch sight screwed to the top strap with elevation and windage micro click adjustment and white outline of the notch. 

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two piece wood checkered target grips with the football cutout and gold S&W medallions. There are a couple minor handling marks and compressions. There are no chips or cracks. The checkering is slightly worn.  Overall, the grips are in about Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Nickel, Case Colored Hammer and Trigger

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore but there is minor fouling present.  In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 98% of its metal finish. The cylinder has a thin-crisp turn line. There are minor handling marks on the revolver throughout.  The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver rates in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder lockup shows faint play with the trigger depressed on all cylinders. The double-action trigger is smooth and the single-action trigger is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This revolver comes with a blue Smith & Wesson box and moisture absorbent paper. 

Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 57 occupies a distinctive place in the N-frame lineage, representing the company’s answer to shooters who wanted authoritative power without stepping all the way up to the .44 Magnum. Introduced in 1964, the Model 57 was conceived as a refined, adjustable-sight companion to the fixed-sight Model 58 and reflected Smith & Wesson’s confidence in the then-new .41 Magnum cartridge. By 1980, when this revolver was produced, the Model 57 had firmly established its reputation as a serious, purpose-built magnum with exceptional balance and mechanical refinement.

Chambered in .41 Remington Magnum, the revolver reflects a cartridge history rooted in performance and precision. The .41 Magnum was developed to deliver flatter trajectories and deep penetration, earning respect among handgun hunters and experienced revolver shooters who appreciated its controllability relative to larger magnums. In a 4-inch configuration, the Model 57 offers a particularly appealing balance of authority and handling, while the pinned barrel, adjustable rear sight with white outline, and serrated ramp front sight with orange insert underscore its practical, shooter-oriented design.

This example presents with approximately 98 percent of its original nickel finish, complemented by crisp markings, sharp screw heads, and a clean, well-defined cylinder turn line. The bright bore with sharp rifling supports the strong overall impression of careful ownership, and the factory wood target grips with football cutouts and gold medallions retain an honest, lightly handled appearance. Retaining its original blue Smith & Wesson box, this Model 57 stands as a fine representation of late-20th-century S&W craftsmanship, blending mechanical precision, visual appeal, and enduring magnum performance.
