The hammer and trigger have minor operational wear in otherwise strong case color. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in about Fine-Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The single action trigger is crisp and the double action smooth. The cylinder locks up with barely perceptible play when the trigger is depressed. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes in a two-piece blue cardboard S&W box with gray steel reinforced corners, the serial number hand-written on the bottom in white, and cleaning accessories including rod, brush, mop and grooved alloy-handle screwdriver in a wax paper sleeve. The box has scattered scuffs, storage wear, and light fraying at corners, in about Good-Very Good condition. The cleaning accessories show little to no sign of use.

Our Assessment: Though the .22 Magnum cartridge was developed by Winchester, their development of a firearm that chambered the cartridge lagged and Smith & Wesson was able to modify their Model 17 to accept the new cartridge in a matter of months. Voila! The model 48 was born. Since then, to this very day, it has remained a popular companion gun for rifles chambered in the same caliber. This example is a fairly early one, produced in 1960, built on a 4-screw frame. The revolver is in about Fine-Excellent condition with 97% of its original finish, a great bore, strong mechanics, and minor wear in its original stocks. The revolver also comes with what appears to be its original box, a perfect addition for a Smith collector or a .22 Magnum fan. Please see our photos and good luck!
