Our Assessment: The Smith and Wesson Model 41 is widely regarded as one of the finest American made rimfire target pistols ever produced, designed from the outset for precision competition and refined accuracy. Development began with prototypes in the late 1940s, culminating in full production by 1957, and the model has remained in production for decades due to its exceptional reputation. Its 18 degree grip angle was intentionally patterned after the 1911, providing a familiar and natural point of aim for competitive shooters transitioning between platforms.
This example is fitted with the desirable 7 inch barrel featuring a serrated matte top surface for glare reduction, a Patridge style front sight, and a fully adjustable rear sight mounted to the barrel extension. The pistol retains approximately 95 percent of its original blue finish, with light operational wear and minor surface smudging consistent with careful use. Markings throughout remain crisp and well defined. The two piece checkered wood target grips with palm swells and thumb shelves remain sharp, free of cracks, and show only minimal handling marks, presenting in Fine overall condition.
Mechanically, the pistol functions correctly and features the Model 41’s famously light and crisp single action trigger, along with a manual thumb safety and magazine disconnect. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no visible erosion, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. This pistol includes two original Smith and Wesson 10 round magazines as well as the matching factory box and paperwork. The Model 41 remains a benchmark for rimfire target pistols, valued equally for its shootability, engineering, and long standing place in competitive shooting history.
